| Samuel Chessler, high school graduate |
This is how Samuel's high school graduation differed from his middle school graduation: We did not bring lawn chairs and lounge about, chit chatting while ocean breezes wafted over us. We were at an EVENT, with 600 graduating, and the mission was to get everyone's name read, hand shaken, tassle turned, caps tossed, and then out of the parking lot. Professional and amateur photographers buzzed about. Family members lifted up foam core cutouts of their high school graduates. Seniors spent the night before decorating their caps with their college colors. (Samuel, no exception, taped the Kenyon College coat of arms on top of his cap.) In less than ninety minutes, it was over and done. Samuel is a high school graduate, an adult, a voter, a car driver, a well spoken young man. It was glorious; it was bittersweet. It was the end of back to school nights and car pools and art projects that required toothpicks and a month's worth of toilet paper rolls. And we won't walk this way again. We'll have two kids in college at the end of August. The quiet might be deafening.
Steven and I were there in person with Samuel's brother Benjamin, two uncles, Mike and Mark, and aunt, Alyce, and Grandpa Sherman. Everyone else was there in spirit.
Congratulations Samuel. Now get on to those new adventures.
Love, Mom
