Del Mar Highlands at Christmas
This is a first for me. I don't usually cover a shopping mall in a blog post, but I feel compelled to give a shout out to Del Mar Highlands, a decades-old shopping center in North County San Diego that has expanded and reimagined itself over the last several years. It's a shopping mall that you want to go to. Prime example, the holiday tree covered in surfboards, next to the huge leaping whale made out of driftwood, next to the giant blue adirondack chair that can seat six, near tall tiki lamps. It's just fun and beachy.
Then there is the new Sky Deck Restaurant Collective, which, as the name implies, is a collection of "open air" restaurants under a single multistory roof. Sky Deck also has a nautical theme, with boats and floats suspended from the ceiling, and a forest of metal kelp below. We came to try out one of the restaurants, Marufuku Ramen. Yes, it's a chain, but what a chain, with a line to get in.
Our wait was well rewarded. Steven and I both had delicious ramen bowls, served in branded handmade ceramic bowls. I tried the rice beer (you really can taste the rice); Steven had sake, served to the point of overflowing in a wooden box. After our satisfying dinner, Steven got ice cream downstairs at Handel's while I slipped in to Geppetto's toy store. (The kid in me never dies.) I selected the Tropical Rainforest Jungle kit for myself, and a mystery Lego minifig puzzle for Samuel (he was back up in the Bay Area watching Scout for us, after all). A great night at the mall.
