Conti Musee, New Orleans

Samuel admires the wax likeness of Satchmo

What is possibly the tackiest museum in New Orleans?  I think the Conti Wax Museum might fill the bill.  First opened 51 years ago, it will close next month to make way for luxury condos.  Luckily, we managed to see it before it all goes away.  The lobby featured a young wax likeness of New Orleans' favorite musician, Mr. Louis Armstrong.   It only gets better once you venture inside.

Napoleon Bonaparte informs his brothers he's selling Louisiana.

I give the museum credit for trying to bring Louisiana history to life.  Take the fascinating scene above.  I knew that Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States for 4 cents an acre.  What I did not know is that he informed his brothers of this while in the tub.  This is the sort of vignette you can't wipe from your mind, even if you try. Voodoo queens, slave beatings, lynchings, and executions round out the rest of the exhibits at the museum.  And if these real life dioramas don't scare you enough, the museum also includes a hall of horrors (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.).
